Did you know that the Panama Canal used to belong to the U.S.? #shorts #maps #geopolitics #history
The canal was built at the beginning of the 20th century when Panama was still part of the Republic of Colombia. However, Colombia refused to allow the United States to build the canal through its territory. So to get around this, the U.S. supported Panama's independence movement and helped the country gain independence from Colombia in 1903. Thereafter, the U.S. signed a treaty with Panama that gave the U.S. control over a 10-mile-wide strip of land in Panama where the canal could be built. This area became known as the Panama Canal Zone, which was a U.S. territory in all but name. The ULTIMATE Border Crossing | VAN LIFE TRAVEL Reality in PANAMA
Join us as we tackle the ultimate border crossing of the Americas! Shipping our van from Panama to Colombia.
It is next to impossible to drive from Panama to Colombia (from North to South America). This is due to a 66 mile region of dense marshland known as the Darien Gap. It is a notoriously dangerous region with no proper roads. Because of this, overlanders have to put there van on a cargo liner and have it shipped from Panama to Colombia.
It is a daunting process but we will take you through each step and prove that it is achievable!

We Visited Panama City and the Reality Surprised Us
Could this be Latin America’s most underrated city? Serge and I first visited Panama City about 15 years ago, so it feels amazing to be back, this time with our kids. You don’t often find Panama City at the top of travelers’ bucket lists, but I think this city actually has a lot to offer. One thing is making this trip really special is that we’re traveling with two of our favorite YouTubers: @OskarandDan!
When you're done with this one, watch @OskarandDan's Panama video here:

But Who really owns the Panama Canal !?
At the beginning of 20th century, The united states wanted to build a canal to shorten the journey between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean with 11,000 km on the current territory of Panama, but at that time, Panama was still part of the Republic of Columbia. Because the Colombian government didn’t allowed the U.S. to build the canal on it’s territory, The united states decided to help Panama get it’s independence from Colombia which finally happened in 1903. Starting with 1904, Panama gave the U.S. control over a 10 mile wide strip of land to allow them to build the canal.
This piece of land was basically U.S. territory.
The U.S. owned the Panama Canal Zone and the canal itself until 1999 when they agree to transfer both the canal and the canal zone to Panama.
The neutrality of the canal is guaranteed by the treaty of Torrijos-Carter, which, because Panama has no military, allows the United States to intervene in case the canal neutrality is under threat.
